Unite to Elect Senator Barack Obama President

Top Asian Pacific American leaders recently participated in a recent Maryland Democratic Unity Rally.  As the Democratic presidential primary has come to an end, leading Asian Pacific Americans Democrats, who supported both Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have united to support Senator Obama for President.

Maryland House of Delegates, Delegate Susan Lee along with Paul Tiao and Minh Le are leading and chairing the Maryland Asian Pacific Americans for Obama.  The Maryland Democratic primary produced a record turn out of over 800,000 Democrats which included Asian Pacific Americans, young and first time voters.

“Both Senators Obama and Clinton made history, and now our kids can see that is truly possible for a minority or woman to be the presidential nominee and president.  Now that the primary has come to an end, it is important that we unite and elect Barack Obama as our next President,” said Delegate Lee.

Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler and Congressman Elijah Cummings are Co Chairs of the Maryland for Obama campaign.  “I commend the outstanding leadership and hard work of the Maryland Asian Pacific Americans for Obama, which is a vital part of the campaign and will help ensure a victory for Obama in November,” noted Gansler.

The group has had several post primary meetings and gathered together top leaders from a diverse cross section of the Asian Pacific American community who are working on outreach, media, unity rallies, voter registration, GOTV, and other events in Maryland, Virginia, and the DC area and assisting the National Asian Pacific Americans for Obama on a $1 million fundraiser expected to draw over 1,000.

The group also created an student internship program which will send students to assist the Obama campaigns in Virginia and Maryland.  Coalition of Asian Pacific American of Democrats of Maryland Vice Chairman Martin Ma, stated, “this election is about positive change and electing a President who understands, has lived, and will be a champion of our issues.”

CAPAD-MD Chairman and Maryland Democratic Party Vice Chair Dr. Ngoc Chu stated, “this election is truly inspiring, its about a candidate who is the child of Kenyan immigrant and Kansas native, raised in Hawaii, attended schools on scholarships, as a Harvard Law graduate bypassed high paying law firms to work in the community and now wants to take the country in a new direction.”

Minh Le added, “He is truly the embodiment of the American Dream, something which many Asian Pacific Americans aspire to.”

CAPAD-MD Special Advisor Kun Sin stated, “The group is working very hard to ensure the Asian Pacific American community is not only energized, but also plays a major and historic role in electing Barack Obama President in what will be a close election in November.”
